tf2s gameplay is much more varied ig
they're not all just guy with gun and maybe an ability on the side
the characters are iconic
the visual design is clear and convys everything perfectly
the genre peaked in 2007 that's why everything coming after feels so ... boring and uninspired

All these are true but that's more to do with TF2 specifically and not the genre

I only played like 1 or 2 games of overwatch but it seemed like they were all just characters with guns
only differing from the likes of CoD in that which gun you get is locked to the character
maybe they have roles, like tank characters, ones with movement, dmg dealers, obligatory healer etc. just like a moba. importantly, some characters roles overlap
but tf2 classes are like playing different games. heavy is considered the most boring precisely because he's just a guy with a gun

I was grouping tf2 in with the rest because it's so old (I think I started playing it when I was like 10 and it had already been out for years at that point) and because it's more of a hat trading simulator/aimbot hacker playground than a fps at this point
It was very fun back in the day though
