Did you guys know that baldurs gate is based on DND? :marseycringe:

I unironically bullied dnd players many years ago at school :marseyshrug:. I just bought the game (used to want to bang a red cosplayer chick) and its not something like cyberpunk where you're a guy with a gun :marseymini: or witcher3 where you're a guy with a sword :marseygeralt: but a wierd hold hands and take turns autismo game :marseydramautist:. I FINALLY understand why reddit likes it so much :marseyyikes:

The only good turn based games are a board game like chess or monopoly despite some people being autismo about that too.

"but but but i want to be the wierd nonhuman blah blah blah" fricking wierdos :marseyautismcap:

This is why I stick to games like COD battle royale or semi milsims where its chill. All the guys in there you could grab a beer with.

I still think people who use abbreviations other than RPG cross line into autism. And rpg should be used no more in this setting than jamsheed's.

using CRPG instead of RPG = AUTISM. Had to google what crpg meant.

there's no normal people ping group so I'll just use !pings instead. Agree???

Kinda agree, and I used to think like that until I ran into r-slur boards of 4chan:

ARPG: action RPG, like Fallout 3.

CRPG: classic stuff like Baldur's gate, usually western and turn-based

JEPG: Japanese RPG, like final fantasy series (all of them), kinda...

It gets really silly and neurodivergent when you notice how much overlap there can be, which is why there's so much sneeding on /v/ and /crpg/ on 4chan.

!g*mers, Battlefield: Modern Warfare 2 is actually a ARPG because you gain experience which levels you up to better weapons.

Jrpgs all suck. The format is inherently bad

:#redditneckbeardtalking:

Games like Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG will always be legions above Tolkien wannabe WRPG crap. Everything is far superior, from the gameplay to the storytelling (which is often downright nonexistent in WRPGs) to the art design. Not to mention, JRPG games are actually different from each other, whereas nearly all WRPGs are the exact same ersatz The Lord of the Rings/Dungeons and Dragons clone, completely devoid of any creativity or originality.

!G*mers and !weebs, back me up on this please. :neckbeard:

You know, I recall hearing about Chrono Triggger and reading about it, but I never got around to it when I was young. I played Legends of GAIA which was great and seemed similar enough to Chrono Trigger which is why I didn't play it. It was a good storyC but it's been decades since I played it (and only once).

There was that rpg where your blue-haired character could transform into a dragon. Don't recall the name of it. Wild Arms was r-slurred. I saw a friends play Super Mario RPG and wasn't impressed because it was too childish looking.

Chrono Trigger is second only to Yume Nikki :marseyuboa2: as my favorite game of all time. Everything about it is absolutely a masterclass in game design. The level design, art design, battle system, storytelling, soundtrack, and use of 16-bit technology are all pitch-perfect to a tee. It's a game that completely sucks you in and never lets go, and it has lost zero of its power in the 29 years since it was released (the game was originally released the same year that I was born, actually). :marseyzoomer:

Super Mario RPG is one of the greatest games of all time as well, for the same reasons. :soymario:

The game you're thinking of with the blue-haired character transforming into a dragon, I'm pretty sure, is either Blue Dragon or one of the Dragon Quest games. :marseydragon2:

Every time I've tried to play a WRPG like the ones from Bethesda, I've been bored to tears. They just don't have the same magic that a great JRPG does. :marseydisagree:

The art, storytelling, characters, etc etc might be the best ever but none of that makes the abysmal gameplay any better. Boil it down and the gameplay of pokemon Red on the Gameboy is the same as final fantasy 745

(FF14 doesn't count, it's J in country only)

Pokemon Red has not really held up very well - especially when compared to the JRPGs that I cited. However, it is still far better than mind-numbingly boring WRPGs that revolve around endless dungeon-crawling in the same drab, grey dungeons and battling the same unimaginative orcs and other Tolkien creatures over and over again. At least Pokemon Red gives you some degree of variety in the battles and environments, and at least the characters are original and not just bastardized versions of characters from old fantasy novels and tabletop RPGs.

You're inherently bad.

:marseyindignant:

Yes, I fully agree, but they were fun when I was a wee lad. :marseywholesome: In fact, Lufia and Lufia II are still my favorites to this day. That 99-level dungeon where you start with nothing was frickin great. I just wish the normal modes (main "campaign") were harder. I'd go without buying any armor or weapons from the shops and still dominate

It really depends :#nerd:

If we're talking about JRPGs based on Dragon Quest, that game series tried to streamline the DnD experience so it misses the character roleplaying element RPG's are usually known for :#marseydisguise:

However, some make up for that by overhauling the combat system like Bravely Default and Octopath, or go for a freeform approach like Xenoblade X :#twerkingfurry3:

JRPGs are closer to visual novels with failable combat minigames than actual tabletop RPGs. Their combat system is propped up by elemental damage types and status effects, which are optional features in a tactical turn based combat system, but are the only things keeping a menu-based combat system from being the equivalent of a bad crafting minigame with nearly predetermined outcomes. I also have a grudge against Dragon Quest in particular for making a significant portion of g*mers think that a slime is the fantasy equivalent of a goomba rather than a monster with unique abilities. The ability to precisely define the location of characters and monsters is the reason Dungeons and Dragons existed in the first place (it started out as a wargame), and there's no excuse for using theater of the mind in a modern video game.

Ff14 is good :marseyindignant: although its closer to a visual novel than a jrpg.

Yeah IMO the only thing that makes FF14 a jrpg is its country of origin. The gameplay is completely different from the normal jrpg format.

Honestly, for the normie g*mer, those are much easier to understand. If they're old enough, they'd intuit what Metroidvania is. And soulslike is pretty clear because all of them have played dark souls.

RPG subcategories require a special kind of autardism.

You can call it autism :marseyforevertiedup: if you want but the genre is about as broad as rock music.
