Reforming the copyright and patent system would literally benefit everyone except the corporations that still milk money from some IP produced 100 years ago or just leave some product to rot overtime with no use whatsoever other than gathering dust

It's going to be a requirement the nation will need to face, especially with the advent of Generative AI. The only issue is how slow the courts and legislature are to act and how uninformed they are of current issues, so I don't have faith that they can come up with a reliable solution in a timely manner.

Piracy has already solved video game preservation. The only problem is when the big boys use our courts to stomp out emulator devs and ROM archives.

I used to use this torrent site called the pleasure dome (not a porn site, believe it or not) that had every system up through PS2. They had obscure collections like every Sega CD game and every PC Engine CD. It was cool as shit and I thought it would be around forever. Now all that shit is on private trackers only as far as I know.

How much this is done is greatly overexagerated. Just so happens that most overexegrating strags love bing bing wahoo.

pirate sites have basically always been better for preservation anyways, because you can't really remove anything

Their idea of preservation is distributing intellectual property over the Internet for FREE

Yeah why not? Most of this shit isn't generating any revenue and the japs who made it probably threw away the source code 20 years ago

Yeah I don't care about that. It's just disingenuous to call it a preservation movement like you're a museum or something. Just share your games and play them. Didn't be a queer about it.

I think the neurodivergents who soy over lost media are genuinely more interested in copying and repackaging files forever than actually playing them tbh

Zoomers are too afraid to commit actual piracy so they cope and justify it with how they technically aren't breaking the law or whatever and the company is actually the bad guy and it's insuffrable

Like let's take Monster Rancher Advanced 2 for example. It would take more money to reformat/native emulate it and wouldn't be worth the revenue of like 5 neurodivergent still buying it.
So why is preserving the original game considered stealing potential profit from corporations if they wouldn't make any profit in the first place reselling it.

Because you won't be buying their new slop if you can still play their old slop

Yes, I'm making an statement about how the "lost of potential profit" isn't valid, like these corporations are trying to claim.
They still have the legal right to take down these roms and go after the people who dumped them online, but their agruement is weak at best and they have no legal footing to go after the users who don't dump rom but play them instead

Remember in the early 2000s when most of the PC games ever made were abandonware and you could just download them from Home of the Underdogs with no trouble? For several years I never paid for a game. I just played the classics.

so the reason they do this is if they don't do this , it opens up liability to lose the copyright. companies hoard copyright for any and all perceived potential for future revenue, whether ever realized or not.
won't change until we change how copyright works, which maybe should be rethought in the age of free information distribution.
copyright itself was pretty shakily justified and probably greatly decreased our societal progression at the time it was implemented to shut down a bunch of low cost book producers distributing information that otherwise did not get distributed.

Wdym shakily justified lol, it's natural that an author owns his creations, literally the same as patents.

violently preventing people from freely copying information is not natural, and had to be artificially imposed upon the natural state.

We were talking about vidya right from the start little brother. Do you really nor consider it natural that a creator preserves the right to license his creations?

was long before vidya
no it requires a ton of involuntary coercion.
and doesn't really hold up to much scrutiny:
if the copyright in question is about objective factual information... withholding objective information for monetary gain instead of spreading it as much as possible is a net negative. heck producing objective information for profit is a huge potential bias and is why academia doesn't run off profit motive. all of society operates more efficiently the more objective correct information people have access too.
if the copyright in question is not about objective factual information... then it's just entertainment, and is therefor not socially necessary. if we even do gain anything from allowing artists to control information, at worst we're losing some entertainment by not protecting it... but probably not because we could fund artists after the fact via donation. in fact, if people aren't willing to donate back to the artists after enjoying the digital media in question... that art probably isn't worth the cost to produce and shouldn't be incentivized by payout. imo when it comes to arts, giving artists control of copyright is probably a negative motivation rather than one that produces benefit. this becomes especially obvious in the corpo iterative junk that comprises of so much of modern media.
what should be protected is knowledge of who is/are actually the artist(s), so people actually can fund who created the art. this protection can be done without coercion via a formal database provided by some entity with an adjudication process should conflicts arise.
u, like most people, demonstrate an extreme stupidity that has barely ever giving much thot to pretty much anything u stand for.
as i said: why must i suffer the continual existence of such extreme stupidity? please literally keep yourself safe for wasting oxygen.

I took leave of my father's decrepit farmhouse in my modest guatemalan automobile. Making reasonable pace across the landscape bereft of anything resembling what i had come to know as modernity. I eventually reached the general store, a flimsy wooden structure that emitted a dark cloud of smoke from a narrow chimney. Two locals sat outside in the midday sun accomplishing nothing and seemingly content in their doing so. Their bestial stupidity, likely the result of generations of inbreeding and race mixing, was apparent both their appearance and vocabulary. My eyes were immediately drawn towards the words emblazoned above the door; these words perplexed me in such a manner that defy ordinary description. I shall not repeat them here for I fear that anyone who stumbles upon this tome will meet the same fate as I should they read them. I have not slept in weeks as I have tried an increasing desperation to decipher the true meaning of that inscription. I fear that it is pointless- the fate of this city slicker is sealed.
