In Veilguard they reveal the dragons were corrupted and turned into conduits for the Elven God's immortality, becoming archdemons.
Tbh I don't remember what they revealed about any of this in DA2 or the dlcs. I just remember that DAO dlc had a talking dark spawn, an idea which they abandoned
