I tried getting back into playing video games after a decade-long break, and I have to say video games aren't good or worthwhile. The only thing that had a long-lasting impact on me is a licensed song, Let's Ride into the Sunset Together by the Lost Weekend Western Swing Band, from Fallout: New Vegas. I haven't even played any video games since December.

>all new games are shit
>0% playtime in new games this year
you know that the internet is wrong like, not even a small amount of the time when it comes to if you'd personally enjoy something, right? I hope you're not listening to r-slurs spout dogshit because we are in a golden era of quality indie games dropping left and right that are so innovative that brand new genres are starting and blowing up infront of our eyes.
Examples:
Cataclismo merging rts, city building & tower defense
Wukong going fricking crazy in every regard on the darkshits genre
Abiotic Factor bringing the shitty open world hit wood craft base genre back to a level based campaign style thing in a 90's half-life one setting
Balatro AND The Bazaar messing with human psyche to create the literal most addicting run-it-back card game / auto battlers to ever exist
some china company releasing marvel rivals that is like a shining copy of pre-reworked overwatch 1 year 1, back before blizzard could strangle their own new IP to death by being themselves
palworld literally threatening the entire foundational system of copyright in media by finally giving us all the dedicated server based pokemon with friends experience we've dreamed of and making nintendo see red in response
And a list of very quality games that had years of early access but finally released into a 1.0 state this year:
Satisfactory (factorio but shooter game dedicated server with friends)
Core Keeper (terraria but 2d the other way and dedicated server with friends)
V Rising (boss focused hit tree build base but this time ur vampire building vampire castle creating human slave army doing sik sik vampire shit)
Last Epoch (Path of exile's only actual competitor (lel))
I didn't say that! I meant that video games as a whole aren't good or worthwhile, which may sound harsh, but I can't help but feel that way. I spent around 750 hours playing video games last year (), so I obviously had to enjoy them at least somewhat, but the enjoyment felt hollow and didn't leave any impact on me. Listening to music, reading literature, or watching films doesn't make me feel that way. This seems to be a problem I only have with video games; the medium feels perpetually adolescent with nothing worthwhile to say.
I'd agree I felt the same for 90% of what I played, regardless of liking the game overall or thinking others would love it.
The only things that made me feel anywhere near traditional media can were far and few in between: getting back on red dead online during winter update to bounty hunt in the snow, maybe some rain world, then a little bit of abiotic factor and lethal company. But that's about it. No movie or book will actually ever come close to rain world for me I don't think, but nor will a video game after learning what went into rain worlds development.
Recent games that come to mind to me when I think of having non-adolencent perpetuity and who actually accomplished saying something slightly engaging: FAR: Lone Sales & Changing Tides, the Little Nightmares games, Outer Wilds, and probably stalker 2 even if its message is the 5,754th iteration of "humans will always threaten each other moreso than anything natural or otherwise ever can".
Sometimes though? Sometimes the best feeling in a videogame can come from going into a team-based hero shooter like deadlock, and using a hero who can pull or interrupt your teammates from casting or doing their shit. Go ability duration build on a high lockdown cc character. That will make anyone feel something quite strong. Everyone involved, really. You make keyboards break as the haha funny guy talking in all caps in chat is forced to walk a little slower.
