It's not self reporting. It also excluding cheaters, something sony very rarely does.
In mugen soul case the game has multiple trophy sets so this platinum trophy is more common in Japanese version than U.S. version but psn count them together.
Most games especially today don't have different trophies sets.
The difficulty is also not related with length since dead or alive 5 you can do in 50 hours and it's a 10/10 game
