The ultra premium all inclusive version with 7 days "early access" (paying extra to play a single player game early LMAO) is $130 and people who were grifted into buying it are not happy.
The largest map size in the game at launch is "normal."
Continent generation is broken beyond belief.
The UI was designed for console babbies and a complete mess on PC.
For a 4x strategy game there is very little info in game on how things work.
Maximum 5 human players for multiplayer.
All fixable problems tbh and I'm sure when I buy it in two years for 75% off it will be a very good game. People who spent $130 to beta test are getting exactly what they deserve.
What's funniest to me is there are very few complaints about the game itself. By all accounts it's a very fun civ game and a worthy successor to civ vi.

WTF is that world generation? Is that actually, factually, empirically true?
(Also, games on PC getting console UI and controls is an actual crime)

Yes, those are typical examples of world gen. The rumor is navigable rivers caused all sorts of problems in the world gen and they only really work when continents are rectangularish.

How are they still struggling with navigable rivers in 2025???

Even the "let's pretend a river is just a very narrow ocean" kludge seems to be quite rare.

It looks like fictional world maps that I drew when I was 7.

This isn't valve, this is corpo rot. The same reason we have harriet tubman.
Some r-slur said "Harriet tubman was cool, and black! Wouldn't that be fun?" "Also we can expand the to console we can sell more"
Everyone who disagrees gets fired for being mean/racist/whatever especially if it's some foid marketing that had no interest in playing the game whatsoever.
Hopefully corpo r-slurs get flayed and we get chud Andrew Jackson with a special whip unit.

A black woman was the strongest American leader. You might disagree. You might even have some evidence to the contrary. But you have to ask yourself: is this really worth losing my job over? A black woman was the strongest American leader.

Corpo rot facilitated in part by Valve. I'm saying the Steam Deck helped bridge the gap between keyboard+mouse gaming and controller gaming, and made it far easier for companies to justify designing for both.

Companies did this because the console market is so huge that it can't be neglected, modern game budgets are massively bloated, and modern dev cowtools let you target all those platforms without needing to maintain entirely separate and incompatible codebases. If you're already including controller support for consolestrags, it's trivial to have it for PCstrags too. The Deck is a drop in the bucket compared to the PS5.

Just make a goddarn mouse and keyboard for PlayStation. They should have figured this shit out twenty-five years ago.

I hate gaming at my desk honestly. I either want to play in VR or lie back on my couch.

So true. I tried playing Darkest Dungeon 2 with a controller, but it sucked so bad. Luckily, games can like that can be played lying down on the couch with the keyboard on the coffee table.

I'll play games like that on my laptop. My gaming PC is mostly a headless system for my VR headset or my MacBook. Civ is actually fantastic on iPad though, it fits the format really well.
The only game I've played recently that I felt needed a mouse and keyboard is BG3.

The Deck rules because it actually includes ways to use proper PC controls in a console form factor. I can play isometric RPGs and strategy games with the touchpads, I've tried on the handhelds that lack them and it's a bad time.

Lmao I actually took those screenshots and posted the reddit thread about map generation, it's hilariously bad. There's a developer console you can use to reveal everything at the start of the game.
I spent 45 minutes testing map types and was so disgusted I refunded the game immediately afterwards. Suck my peepee Firaxis.
