This is such a stupid myth. People married off their children at about the same age as it is done now, around early 20s. There's a lot of sources confirming this throughout the ages, but a good argument for it comes in form of reasoning, because if you send two 12 year olds to live and provide on their own, they're going to fricking die.

The only case where people did intentionally get married off early and where this misconception likely comes from is in high society where it was done for political reasons. It was done to secure allies and reinforce relationships between states and nobles. Marriage was done to bond the two houses by blood- now that they're relatives, they should not harm each other. It was more of a gesture of trust than anything, it was definitely not normal to birth children at 12

Also it varied quite a bit over time. When the economy was doing well it was possible to get married a little earlier, just like in modern times. It wasn't because it was some kind of cultural norm to r*pe children.
