"Xbox Series X|S sold an estimated 2.7 million units in the US market during 2024, marking its worst full-year performance in Xbox history. The numbers in Europe are staggeringly worse, with an estimated 290,000 units sold over the year. When you add the two up, you get just under 3 million in total units sold, which paints a very worrying picture for Microsoft's hardware gaming division.

These numbers are both down from 2023 (which was also a tough year), when Xbox sold 3.8 million units in the US and 550,000 units in Europe, for a combined 4.35 million. This is a nearly 10% drop year over year in units sold, leading Microsoft to report a Microsoft reported a 42% drop in Xbox hardware revenue for the quarter ending in June 2024 in recent months."

Meanwhile PS5 had its best quarter ever last holiday season with record breaking console sales and software sales, selling 9.5 million units from october 2024 to december 2024. PS5 has sold 4 million units in november 2024 meaning they sold more units in a single month than Xbox did during the whole year.

Many people haven't noticed this, but Xbox has completely stopped marketing their consoles since last year. No holiday sales, bundles, discount...

Xbox was also out of stock multiple times in different countries, like due to low supply.

They are clearly moving on.

My take: MSFT is laying the groundwork to pivot the Xbox to a budget windows-based gaming PC so they can merge their two gaming platforms. It makes no sense for them to compete with themselves.

A windows-based machine with a console UX that can run most AAA games at 4k/60fps and a price point around 600 bucks would make way more sense for them than another iteration of Xbox. Also it would absolutely btfo Sony.

I think MSFT saw what valve did with the steam deck and realized that gaben was going to eat their lunch while also pushing people onto Arch Linux :marseygroomerarch:

Yeah it's solid. It really is just Arch with some extra stuff on top.

Steam deck is the future

Idk how anyone can use one with a dock on a TV and not see that and then you can take it wherever. Going to be like mobile phones taking over desktop usage

I dont use mine with a dock much but it is surprisingly versatile with peripherals. I was able to get both a switch wired controller, and a hotas flight stick configured and usable with the deck.

I like the dock since it hooks into my sound system and always has power. Bought 2 docks off amazon for the living room and bedroom TVs which I couldn't do both easily with Xbox. The controller mappings work usually but about 50% of steamOS games are iffy or too old/mouse oriented (stellaris or shadow of doubt)
