Just imagine having an MTX that is so fricking predatory that it makes your playerbase nostalgic for the lootbox cancer from the 2010s, and now that most of them have migrated to Marvel Rivals, you bring them back as a way of saying that you listen to your community or something

Overwatch lootboxes weren't even bad. You just passively got cosmetics from levelling.
COD had the most egregious lootboxes. You bought an expansion then the new guns were added to the lootbox pool or you could pay even more money to get them immediately.

Yeah the OW ones were nbd. You got a ton of them from just playing, they made it so they couldn't give dupes if possible not to, and everything in them you could "purchase" directly with credits that you got from dupes (or just directly from the loot boxes). When OW2 came out, I had something like 50k credits - the most expensive skins cost 3k, so I could basically buy anything I wanted (not ALL of them but anything I was realistically going to use). Easily the best cosmetic system.
They obviously changed it to get more money. Anybody saying they did it for "fairness" is r-slurred.
Another fun fact for people who didn't play OW but want to laugh at how shitty it was - the same "free" cosmetics from the original game, like the EXACT same ones, they turned around and resold for a straight $20 in the cash shop.

It pretty much solved the biggest problems with MOBAs but it could never overcome how LoL and to a lesser extent DOTA 2 made their ungodly huge playerbases from irl friend groups and big name streamers roping people into the game.
MOBAs are a weird anomaly in gaming that were the result of several things lining up at the same time. In the future subsequent gens of g*mers will probably be able to understand the popularity of MMOs far better than MOBAs.

I did a bunch of COD in 2023 with some sweatier friends and it is pretty funny how pay to win it was.
