Great can't wait for the fricking nerds to virtue signal about stopping any plans we could have to exploit mars for resources because we cant disturb the indiginous life lmao

If there is actually life on Mars it would indicate that life is incredibly common and not much of value was lost if we sterilized on one planet. On the other hand, as Mars is not very attractive for resources to begin with, we might just preserve it until we have thourougly researched it, just to quench our curiosity.

Yeah Ironically the moon is way more atracctive for resources because of helium3

Why do we need helium3?
Jump in the discussion.

My very limited understanding on the subject is that helium3 I an incredebly efficient source of fuel for interplanetary spaceships

We could bury a fusion bomb incredibly deep underground, blow it to make a huge cavern, then fill it with water and blow another fusion bomb to generate a frickton of high-pressure steam to run generators with. This process could be repeated.
Really though the issue is creating stable sustained fusion that puts out more energy than we put in. Researchers here in California led by Omar Hurricane achieved fusion ignition for the first time, creating a very brief self-sustaining reaction, so we're on the trail.

it would already be a reality if we spent 1% of all the money wasted on frivolous welfare programs on fusion instead.
a lot of very powerful people want to delay fusion for as long as possible, because it would ruin most energy companies, oil companies, etc..

It depends on whether it’s earth-based life or not. If it has a common ancestor with us, it could still be just an asteroid collision carrying over some microbe, which would be only weak evidence for widespread life in the universe.
But yes, if we found life that had independently emerged, that would be the most profound discovery humanity has ever made.

Unless panspermia is true, it would be an incredible coincidence if the only two plants in a 100k lightyear radius with life would be neighbors.
Same on earth, really. Once the first explorers found life on Australia, it was rational to assume that the whole earth is teeming with it.

Not necessarily. Intelligence and Cell Organelles are some good candidates too. Multicellular live in particular is a very strong candidate, afaik it took live 2 billion years to figure this out, so roughly two thirds of the time it was around.
