I have no experience or knowledge in the corporate world, what do people like this even do? They don't seem to produce anything or provide any services. Or do any work at all really. Is this like in American Psycho where none of them really do anything?

The good ones understand your personality, skillset and potential as a candidate. They also build a reputation with various companies. Most of them suck but the good ones can save you a lot of time and guide you through the interview process

Yeah once in a decade youโ€™ll meet the person who was actually built for recruiting. Always the type thatโ€™s halfway through an MBA, majored in the primary education their organization recruits and actually smart: then you have the 99.5% of recruiters that are actually just using a paid for resume scalper to get a cut of your sign on bonus lol

They're also supposed to filter out applicants so actual working managers and engineers don't have to waste their time. Good recruiters are rare though, so everyone else ends up doing most of their work for them.

Being a good judge of talent/character/potential of people is actually very useful for key positions. A lot of the higher ups don't have this skillset so they rely on others to bring them the proper candidates.
