If it's easier to switch between communities (i.e. subreddits), all of them will intermingle and the culture will homogenise. drama.net will act more like PCM, PCM will act more like drama.net.

That's not how it works. Despite the ease of switching (or perhaps even because of it), r/drama and r/subredditdrama just kept drifting further apart, both culture and content wise, despite literally starting out as the same exact thing.
With places that have fundamentally different ethos to start with - ease of switching will do very little.

My experience is the opposite but I'm a newstrag. I was baffled at first when I tried to troll them because they were surprisingly close to AHC, and in such great numbers. I wasn't aware that people like this exist unironically, and in such great numbers.
