Who the frick has more than a couple friends as an adult? Facebook friends and common-interest Groomercord degenerates don't count. I've got a wife and about six separate people I can call a friend, and it's already a goddarn pain having to remember to talk to these people, and remember their names.

People in 'friend groups' and who have 'friendsgiving' and only know each other from work and their group IMs share more a common politics and nostalgia for high school, than they do a friendship.

Five seems like a good ceiling for friends, especially if you have a significant other. Then if you have kids, one seems like a solid ceiling, maybe two.
