Eh, I assumed you paid some amount to them, either on installments or simply a large lump sum (like buying an annuity).
But wouldn't wizards be able to pretty trivially create counterfeit coins? I mean they can literally turn everyday objects into literal living flying butterflies so presumably alchemy is also real and they can trivially create as much gold or whatever as they want, and magically forge it into whatever shape they want.
Like literally everything about fantasy you need to ignore all the massive glaring holes in world building. Harry Potter is worse than most here but all fantasy suffers from it, which is why it's ultimately a fairly dumb genre.
