yeah I risked a charge for criminal mischief, but it was difficult to prove. since I have no criminal record, the person who was bringing these charges against me would have had to pay for legal fees to get at most six months in jail but probably probation.
(to be fair I was also an butthole about this, because I have passive income that would have gave me more money coming out of jail than going in, so I said cocky things like "I'd love a semester of study abroad in criminology.")
I spent about a week looking into this when I could. there are tiers of jail, and the kind of jail for misdemeanors is "jail for people who usually aren't in jail": graffiti, stealing from walmart, trespassing, bar fights, small amounts of weed (before it was legal), and so on. in 24 US states, the maximum penalty for a misdemeanor is up to one year.
it's still jail and still sucks, but you have considerably more freedom in terms of what visitors you can see, what gifts you can get, etc.; some prisons allow extremely limited access to the internet, continuation of prescriptions if e.g. you're on SSRIs or something, and various other leniences. you can probably still pay your bills if you have the money. this is usually for jails under one year. also, and importantly, the police do not treat you in the same way.
it's going to depend on the state, the jail, and lots of other things. here is an article about the differences in texas, which is where I live. arizona once had an issue with notoriously harsh jails under joe arpaio, and arpaio was actually convicted for contempt of court related to this — but pardoned by... trump, lol.
if it's just a misdemeanor, more than likely, if he is convicted, he will get some combination of probation + community service + a fine. if he serves jail time, trump's team is going to arrange for him to be sent to the most lenient jail they can argue for — and he certainly has the funds to make those arguments. and, too, if he serves jail time it's also plausible he will serve a fraction of this time and be released early.
so, yeah, the term "slap on the wrist" exists for stuff like this.
