Background
Classic WoW came around ofically in 2019, but people have been playing on private servers (emulated versions of older WoW and some current versions of WoW) since the game came out in 2006 2004. Typically these were run by 3rd worlders, often involving significant amounts of p2w, cheating, and otherwise undesirable behavior. Blizzard routinely threatened server hosts and providers with lawsuits, causing many of them to randomly shut down without any notice or contingency plans.
Since day 1 Blizzard has made a ton of changes that differentiate Classic WoW from the retail versions but dopamine addicted 30 year olds still lap it up. Gold buying and botting has been a massive problem since Classic launched in 2019 but Blizzard never cared, handing out measly 2 week suspensions to the most egregious offenders on occasion.
In 2015 the WoW Token was introduced to combat (profit) off of the large gold selling market their game had attracted. This allowed players to buy a WoW Token for $20 and sell it for whatever the gold rate was in-game. The buyers of the token would be able to use it to pay for their subscription cost for a month.
Drama
As of today, Blizzard has added their "WoW Token" to Classic WoW Wrath of the Lich King. This is 3 expansions and ~5 years earlier than it "should" have become available. Even though there has been numerous changes (good and bad) and sanctioned gold selling for the nearly 4 years of Classic Wow's lifespan, people are pissed.
thank fricking god we dont get RDF on Classic Wrath to not ruin the Classic experience....here's WoW Token btw
when you put it like this lmao, actual clown company

the worst part of these tokens is they're game time only, not bnet balance like retail
They wouldn't want people to get diablo 4 for "free"
They will buy it anyway lol
You can cry about token all you want, this is what you(players) wanted
look at amount of gdkps and goldbuying. Do you think someone farmed legit to buy Flare, Voidrethar or Comet for 100-200k gold? Farmed what, 2 years of slave pens boosting or HS bosting? maybe dailies?
GDKP hosts making 12 Ulduar 25man runs a week? completly legit. Doing that since TBC? they just hoard gold, not sell them right?
Every realm is swarmed with gdkp runs. Dungeon GDKP, 10mans GDKP, GDKP for everything, and people throwing absurd amount of gold for mediocre items.
You completly forgot what is "playing the game" or putting any effort into play. Instead everything msut be monetized, instead of working hard ingame and get your reward, you prefer to translate the IRL hour income into gold income, resulting in majority of players buying gold
This is just a result of corrupted playerbase, addicted to instant dopamine rush. None plays the game for pure joy anymore, it's only dopamine per hour. And 2-3years ago everyone was laughing at china servers where everything was botted and turned into gold service. Now look at yourself, literal mobile gatcha players, so obviously big corp capitalized on addicts
100% right, laugh at the redditors
Reddit jannies strike back
Thread where they discontinue rule 4, which prevents discussing private servers
Since the sub came out we've upheld a rule against discussion of private servers and cheats etc on the basis of a good faith that Blizzard would be running Classic to a certain standard.
The standard has been pretty fricking low for a very long time but it's clear today that the mask of integrity has totally fallen from the face of greed.
As such feel free to discuss other options to play all versions of Classic in a way that has a higher integrity than what Blizzard has to offer.
Any bans for Rule 4 will be overturned on appeal.
pure, unadulterated janny seethe
This is the funniest subreddit on the internet right about now
The anger and entitlement some people feel about this game. Like, it is so over the top. People act like it isn't even playable.
There is no pleasing everyone, and it wouldn't matter what state the game is in, people will always b-word. The gaming community can be such babies sometimes.
No, i'm not putting down my addiction and you can't make me!
I donβt get how people are even defending blizzard for adding the token. Like how?!? Saying itβs to counter bots when CLEARLY AND EVIDENTLY it doesnβt do shit to the botting population (have a look at retail).
This is only an excuse to milk the player base⦠and kill their 2006-2008 rerelease of a classic MMORPG.
I'm not defending it because it does suck, but it doesn't make a difference to me in the end. I was playing the game surrounded by gold buyers before, and I will be now. So why cry about it? Nothing of substance has changed.
He's right, the fact that people are choosing this as their breaking point is 1. pathetic 2. probably a lie, they will never quit

Yeah I doubt most players would care about the token

Classic players are pretty whiny about authenticity because they are trying to recapture their youth but yeah there is probably a silent majority who wants the QoL stuff that came with later expansions.

Buying a token with money? Maybe. Selling gold for playtime? Absolutely not, that is very popular.
Evidence: retail exists.

Someone has to buy the token for you to be able to buy it. So buying tokens with money is as popular as using them for game time.

No, it's not a real market. You buy from and sell tokens to Blizzard who adjust the price based on demand, but there's no real buying and selling to each other involved.

No, you're wrong. You buy a token for real money and list if on the auction house. The price isn't fixed by Blizzard and fluctuates all the time. Whenever you buy a token from the auction house another player has purchased it for real money.

Fair enough. But back to the original point, the number of token buyers is very small and the number of token sellers is very large. It's the basic whale economy. So even if the total volume is the same, a minority of people dump big money into the game and a bunch of people just farm their gold to sell for balance.

On retail there's a limit on how many tokens you can buy each month, but yes there are probably people who reach that limit every month.
