The Santa Fe County sheriff’s office confirmed that Baldwin fired the stunt gun, which reportedly contained live rounds instead of blanks.

isn't that what happened to bruce lee's son

How is it a prop gun if it can fire real bullets?

https://quora.com/How-did-real-bullets-find-themselves-in-the-prop-gun-that-killed-Brandon-Lee

The official story is that a β€œdummy round” (a bullet from a round with no propellant) got lodged in the barrel earlier. Then, not realizing that there was a bullet in there, they loaded a blank in the gun behind it. To be clear, calling it a β€œprop gun” is misleading. It was a real gun that was only supposed to be firing blanks. In essence, the dummy round had a bullet but no propellant. The blank had propellant, but no bullet. Put the two together, and you have all the elements of a real round of ammunition, and it fired with enough force to kill him.

I’ve read theories that this rather convoluted tale is actually a cover for a simpler explanation: the gun was loaded with real ammunition by accident. It sounds, ridiculous, I know, but apparently there was real ammo on set (in violation of basic safety protocols), and it’s not hard to imagine a set of circumstances where dummy rounds and real rounds could get mixed up.

Either way, it’s a pretty good example of why no scene should ever be shot, using any kind of explosive or firearm, even fake ones, without a competent armorer on set. Like with so many aspects of safety, if someone isn’t carefully watching to make sure an accident is impossible, sooner or later it’s going to happen.

Iirc, the reason why they had real bullets on set was because they decided to be cheap and make their own dummies and blanks. The story I remember it as is that when they made the dummy bullets, they removed the propellant but they didn’t remove the primer, so when they put in the newly made dummies for some reason or another, someone pressed the trigger which ignited the primer in the cartridge. While the primer is not enough to propel a bullet, it is enough to move it from the chamber into the barrel where the rifling keeps it in place. So when they removed the dummies, without noticing that the bullet for one the cartridges is missing, and added the blanks, the gun basically had all the components for a loaded gun in place like that account said.

You usually by them in bulk, so they probably thought you could get one pack of normal bullets and make them half half dummies and blanks or buy one pack each of dummies and blanks for twice the price. Probably thought they could save that extra 5-10 dollars for something important.

like live firing exercises in the military (not US) is always a stressful event for the officers/NCOs in charge for fear of something like this happening and a lot of emphasis would be put on reminders to check your weapon and stuff

That's why it would be such a good detective story. You'd have the prop guys up as the main suspect but it also would be obvious that they would be suspect so you'd have to look at people who might want to frame them. How it was actually managed, all that. Frick I wish I could write stories.

In Lee’s case, there was already a bullet (the projectile, not the cartridge) stuck in the barrel so when they put in a blank it propelled the lodged bullet as if it was a normal round.

You'd think there'd be some level of checks on this type of thing. Like "prop guns should never have live ammo" and some guy with a stupid-sounding title like Best Key Grip Boy checks the gun and opens a fresh pack of blanks before filming.

This level of r-sluration is mind blowing to me. Why were there even live rounds on set?

The military manages to avoid doing this even with absolutely brain dead r-slurs like Puerto Rican National Guardsmen despite some kind of blank-fire training going on every single day.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

They cheaped out on buying dummies and blanks separately so they decided to make their own.

Which when they did, they forgot to remove the primer in the dummies so when someone pulled the trigger and ignited the primer it β€œpropelled” the bullet just enough into the barrel where it got lodged and waited until someone loaded the blank and killed Lee.

Unironically on the shooter for not checking the rounds.

Also how r-slurred are Americans that they don't know what a prop gun is? A prop gun is a gun that only fires blanks.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

No this is even more r-slurred. In Bruce Lee's case, they had "dummy bullets" for close- ups, which are a primer, an empty case and a projectile. These look like real bullets, and if you pull the trigger the primer will fire, but only has enough power to wedge the bullet just outside the chamber in the barrel.

They also had blanks, which are a primer, a crimped case, and a full or even oversized load of propellent.

Some idiot fired a dummy round, wedged it in the barrel, then loaded blanks and blasted the bullet at full power out the end.

This just looks like the Sigma Propmaster just left a loaded gun on set lmao
