Straight up been feeling like that south park episode for years now.
I know it's not just me being depressed, because I get so much enjoyment from older movies, music, books... and there are of course non-dooky things that come out here and there. They're almost never popular.
I'm just listening to pretty well known 60s/70s/80s music and imagining how on earth I could've disliked it if I was around back then. I don't think I'm just being a contrarian and disliking what's popular.
How did we go from Woodstock to Lizzo? How did we go from original blockbuster movies coming out left and right in the 80s to blockbusters being purely capeshit, remakes/reboots, and capeshit wannabes?
More importantly, will this era of cultural stagnation ever end?
Is Western culture dead forever? Am I just a trans-boomer?

My theory is that media is to accessible now thanks to the internet. While it allows independent stuff to bubble up that wouldn't have had a chance otherwise it also gives a platform to complete trash that now just makes it more of a chore to sift through.
At least when it was all milquetoast TV networks curating it you knew it was taking up a time slot. With things like Netflix they can just toss some money at it and throw it up without having to risk anything but some investment capital because people won't change the channel they'll just watch something else on Netflix

The other thing is that it completely peepeeed recommendation and rating systems. Shit like Steven Universe will show up in βtop recommended tv showsβ threads because their niche audiences are just large enough to flood the reviews but if youβre not an r-slur youβll hate the show.
Issue is the worst with books and anime because all the top recommended books are written for the lowest common denominator of teenage female and all the animes are kept afloat by freaks so they skew libertarian.

Tfw just wanna watch 90's Gundam without having to be associated with the people who publicly gush about shows involving middle school girls waving their tits around.
