How "gook" went from being a Korean compliment of USA to becoming a widespread asian slur

λ―Έκ΅ (migook/g) is Korean for USA.

Literal translation is "grand beautiful country" :marseysaluteusa:

During the Korean War, asian soldiers referred to the USA and their soldiers with their word "migook"

Americans mistook this as them saying "me gook", which is how the term "gook" became an Asian slur

Tl;dr

:marseychingchong: Herro miguk!

:marseyvietnam: Well nice ta meetcha, Gook!

:marseychingchongshooter: :asianchud: :marseyropewithchingchong: :marseychingchongpearlclutch: :marseychingchongitsover:

Common worst Korea L :marseyflagsouthkoreapat:

Look forward to more Korean lessons in 2024!

(technically the term goes back to 1800s Philippines but this another, more modern and funnier origin)
