How "gook" went from being a Korean compliment of USA to becoming a widespread asian slur

미국 (migook/g) is Korean for USA.

Literal translation is "grand beautiful country" :marseysaluteusa:

During the Korean War, asian soldiers referred to the USA and their soldiers with their word "migook"

Americans mistook this as them saying "me gook", which is how the term "gook" became an Asian slur

The usage for Koreans possibly comes from the Korean word "국" (guk), meaning "country",[11] "한국" (hanguk), meaning "Korea", or "미국" (miguk), meaning "America".[12] U.S. soldiers in the Korean War might have heard locals saying miguk (미국), referring to Americans, and misinterpreted this as "Me gook."[13]
