I think very few people actually think s*x work is "empowering" in the sense of being a good or salutary thing, that more people should do.

I think the progressive argument for decriminalizing and destigmatizing s*x work is that, worldwide, most s*x workers are doing the best they can with the opportunities available to them, and are far more likely to be victims than perpetrators of the societal harms of s*x work.

Decriminalizing and destigmatizing s*x work is "empowering" in the sense that wheelchairs and accessible bathrooms are "empowering" for paraplegics. It's not that we should all be in wheelchairs, nor that we should all be doing s*x work. It's that there are people in the world who have very limited options, some of them because of prior bad choices that they had agency and control over, and some of them whose fate was fixed by god.

Are there some people who choose to scoot around in a wheelchair because they are lazy, or because they made prior bad decisions in life? Probably, but who cares? Because a lot of people in wheelchairs have legs that don't work, or that got blown off in a war. Some people probably go into s*x work for shortsighted reasons or as a consequence of prior bad decisions, but a lot of people doing s*x work are doing it because making good life-choices was never a realistic option for them, from early childhood on.

For every insufferable e-thot making $20k per week selling bathwater to g*mers, there are a hundred rub-and-tug refugees trying to give their kids a chance at a better life than theirs will ever be.

I know that the terminally-online feminists who are most visible to terminally-online incels are not representative of the kind of s*x worker who is doing the best with resources they have to survive, but that's selection bias, it's not representative of the global realities of s*x work.
