“Sub-Saharan Africans have never invented anything” :marseyhmm: Redditors attempt to Deboonk this

https://old.reddit.com/r/ForwardsFromKlandma/comments/1c4fz8o/this_account_is_saying_like_he_invented_time/?sort=controversial

It started with a simple claim, “ Nothing has ever been invented within the green area of this continent. Absolutely nothing ever, not even writing. Zero” Naturally, Redditors in /r/forwardsfromklandma took offense to this. They proceed to disprove the statement by providing no evidence to the contrary.

Sub Saharan Africa invented HUMANS!

This fricking r-slur doesn't even realize that humanity originated in Mecca. This has been well documented by the Black Israelites. :marseyyakub:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_science_and_technology_in_Africa

Not exclusively about sub-Saharan Africa but it should suffice anyway

From reading it, South Africa (the country) seems to be punching well above its weight for the modern (post-1800s) era, words words words…

Who is going to tell him? :!marseyhmmhips:

The Haya people of what is now Tanzania were making high grade carbon-steel, the kind still used in girders and pipes today as early as 400 BC.

Looks like they were very late to the party. While it is true that the first "steel" was made in 2000 BC and the mentioned Tanzanians were producing steel along everyone else (the sources I found mention roughly 0 AD. The celts started roughly 800 BC, the Indians made very great steel in 600 BC which was globally, even back then, known. a whole bunch of other nerd stuff that you can read yourself in the link.

Weird how you keep claiming ancient African steel is too “impure” compared to what the celts, Indians, and Chinese were doing, without once actually referring to the processes in which those separate cultures smelted their ores, and only used the fact that we have different grades of steel today to try and take away what the original commentator was saying.

Something tells me you worry about the “purity” of things other than just steel, my dude.

Erm, you're being historically accurate in bad faith! :!soysnoo2:

-Carbon Steel (Tanzania)

-Malaria-detecting jacket (Uganda)

-Solar-powered water purification system & a glove that converts sign language into speech (Kenya)

-First touch-screen medical tablet (Cameroon)

-Voodoo (Benin)

This mf says voodoo lol sjjsjsjwjs

Uh, yeah. Voodoo originated in Benin. And it is something that was invented by humans, no?

Holy shit haha. Redditors are a different breed, man! :marseydicklet:

Funny how those same areas highlighted in green are no longer green irl. I wonder who could have deforested and destroyed all that green space....

Does this neighbor actually think the green is supposed to represent forests? This has to be a bot comment, right? :!marseyrofl:

Plenty of other Redditors post claims with no evidence and argue with eachother, but I'll leave that for you all to go look at yourselves. Until next time! :!marseywave2:

anyways these neighbors are talking about 600 BC. frick all was "globally" known, not just because there was zero communication w/ the Americas or Australia, but because even within the "old world" communication was slow and limited.

Since the dawn of history the Negro has owned the Continent of Africa—rich beyond the dream of poet's fancy, crunching acres of diamonds beneath his bare black feet. Yet he never picked one up from the dust until a white man showed to him its glittering light. His land swarmed with powerful and docile animals, yet he never dreamed a harness, cart, or sled. A hunter by necessity, he never made an axe, spear, or arrow-head worth preserving beyond the moment of its use. He lived as an ox, content to graze for an hour. In a land of stone and timber he never sawed a foot of lumber, carved a block, or built a house save of broken sticks and mud. With league on league of ocean strand and miles of inland seas, for four thousand years he watched their surface ripple under the wind, heard the thunder of the surf on his beach, the howl of the storm over his head, gazed on the dim blue horizon calling him to worlds that lie beyond, and yet he never dreamed a sail! He lives as his fathers lived—stole his food, worked his wife, sold his children, ate his brother, content to drink, sing, dance, and sport as the ape!

Africans invented one of the key components of the development of the modern world: slavery.

Dynastic Egypt originally imported its slaves from Nubia, and even before that it is likely that cultural slavery was widespread in Africa. Later, they became the world leader in slave manufacture by exporting them to Muslims (who imposed onerous regulations on Arab slavery which more or less killed off their local production), before pivoting to European clients in a way that would enable the creation of the modern world. Over time, slavery declined, as colonizers like the Brits shut down African shipping of slaves out of a sense of white cultural superiority, and fascist Italy even invaded Ethiopia in the name of abolishing slavery, which they did in 1942. As Africans drove out the colonizers, however, the domestic slavery industry recovered and is achieving a new vibrancy, with the ILO estimating that sub Saharan Africa has almost 10 million slaves today, producing billions of dollars every year for local African economies.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

it is likely that cultural slavery was widespread in Africa.

IT WAS LESS COMMON THE FURTHER SOUTH YOU WENT AND LOOKED LESS LIKE SLAVERY AS WE KNOW IT TODAY. KHOEKHOE SLAVES WERE MORE LIKE SQUIRES THAN SLAVES AND WOULD EVENTUALLY BE FREED AND INDUCTED INTO THE TRIBE, WITH A COW AND A WIFE TOO IF I recall...

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yes, the first slaves were relatively inefficient. But it was Africans who developed slavery into a highly profitable enterprise instead of a local custom, shipping them long distances to fund sophisticated warmaking machines to manufacture more slaves in nearby geographies.

No one else--not the Europeans, not the Indians, not the Chinese--in the history of the world has accomplished that, especially not at the scale (in both time and space) as Africans managed to. And it's that innovation that has enabled us to live the comfortable lives we do today.
