BS. On any of the big mangas there are 3 offshoots, the original light novel (i still don't know what thar means), the sequel, and it's all titled in Japanese because translating things takes away their sovl or some r-slurred weeb shit. So good luck figuring out which one you're supposed to be reading.

One of the appeals of manga and why it has become so successful worldwide is that there exists manga of each and every single genre and premise imaginable for all target audiences possible, every . single . one, the only relevant Burger comics are capeshit and.... what else? the only non-capeshit successful Amerimutt comic franchise that I am aware of is Archie, and the rest are all extremely niche and barely relevant, perhaps also Scott Pilgrim, which is Canadian but as a :chadbrasileiro: all Canucks are Americans to us.

And the other French-Belgian stuff that is quite different from its Burger counterparts, but still not as popular as how both manga and even Burger comics are, and also some British sci-fi comics that I do not know if there still exist people who read it, as it they are now more known as the source material of popular films such as Judge Dredd, same with how Men in Black originally started out as a comic series but now everyone just associates it with the light-hearted and family-friendly !kino adaptation with Will Smith.

!comicshitters !anime !bookworms thoughts?, yes I know that there are many non-capeslop American comics and stuff, but they are not best-sellers and highly successful, and nor do they have extremely prolific and active fanbases both online and offline, like how manga even has cooking and gambling-themed manga that are best sellers with massive fanbases, meanwhile let us say, an American comic about detectives catching a serial killer is nowhere near as relevant and popular as niche manga is.

There's definitely other genres. Typically from a smaller publisher like Dark Horse or Image.

Saga is for space shit. Wytches for horror. Plenty of murder porn detective stuff.

DC even did Hana Barbera comics a few years ago. I remeber the Flintstones and Wacky Racers being pretty good.

The most popular manga is one genre: shonenshit. There is so much non capeshit comics you dont read since your only comics news is soychud rage bait. Shonen Manga is popular since it's serialized in an easy to buy format, is easy to pirate, and has very broad appeal its not like one piece is going to uncover the MIC :marseyshrug:. DC has their own horror line now, image dynamite boom aftershock ect all publish so many genre comics.

There is just SO MUCH manga. Lots, even most of it, is bad. But there are also lots of excellent mangas and it's a format that doesn't really shy away from new ideas/IPs. Even though for every original idea you have 10 000 versions of the same isekai/harem/high school romance trope.

Manga has some of the best stories in fantasy and sci fi, beating lots of western IPs just because they experiment more with those genres.

Also American comics just don't do slice of life really well. There is no equivalent to low stakes seinen/shounen where the focus is on interpersonal drama.

You're saying this as if being popular with a lot of idiots is a necessary attribute of a good comics.

Grant Morrison's The Invisibles was pretty good, his work on Doom Patrol, while technically capeshit, is unconventional enough to be considered its own thing IMO.

Then there's Neil Geiman, who is also pretty popular.

Translating honorifics is actually r-slurred though because you have everyone referring to eachother as mr. and ms. and it sounds terrible. Either don't translate them, or just remove them

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

The one translation error that gets me is early bleach translators not understanding Chad isn't his fricking name. Chad is his nickname but in some dub episodes people are introduced to Ishida as Chad. Chad is an injoke. You don't introduce your friend to your mom as Chad. What's funnier is that there's clearly more than one translator because they seemingly switch between chad and his real name at random during some fillers.

Also we don't know some character's first names so they're called their last names but in Japanese it's normal to say their last names. So basically everyone has their first names used except people whose first names are never revealed. This is very confusing if you don't check the wiki or understand anime.

Most manga has one series and maybe a spinoff if it's popular but just not being r-slurred is enough to figure which is which and oftentimes they're not directly related.

The light novel is just a book like it's in the name, some manga adapt it, some improve and some regress from it.

Honorifics are almost never directly translated if it's professionally done or done by a competent scanlator. The only exceptions are thing like sensei, chan or similar depending on context. Usually it's either the first time it's brought up to help establish relationship or if it's just apart of the character, like showing them being very non-casual.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

only has one spinoff

But they're invariably titled in Japanese for no reason. So good luck figuring out which is which without reading descriptions. This applies to manga that have English titled animes about them and are commonly referred to in English.

light novel

Are all manga based on light novels? Are there light novels without manga? In what way isn't it just a novel?

No, for instance, Overlord is a LN original, that's its original format, the anime and manga are adaptations of that. A LN has no strict definition, but serial nature and pictures is one component. A LN will have 2-3 color pages at the start, and 8-9 black and white ones scattered throughtout the book to enhance the storytelling at certain scenes. Also, they're usually consecutive-(ever read the book animorphs? It's like that but not self contained)- but that isn't a 100% iron clad rule either. Take "Welcome to The NHK", that's a LN for sure, but it's one and done, and the only illustration is the one on the cover I think, but it's definitely a light novel.

>But they're invariably titled in Japanese for no reason

yeah they're from fricking Japan. Usually Jap titles are shortened to the first few chinkense words though.

>Are all manga based on light novels? In what way isn't it just a novel?

A light novel is just that, a "light novel", just a short novel and they usually get a number of sequels if they prove semi popular among japs. They're basically like novella's and sell like hotcakes. They b comprise most of the Japanese book market apart from Manga. Manga itself makes up 90% of all online book sales in Japan and 30% of the overall literature market

https://news.animenomics.com/p/manga-captures-90-percent-japan-e-book-market

really interesting breakdown ( :marseydespair: or blackpilling)

>Are there light novels without manga?

Yes, a lot. However manga isn't always the main goal. A large number of series only use the manga as a way to promote the light novels and get only like a dozen chapters that go in manga magazines. Weebs read and see some loli, get hooked, buy the novel and bam tons of money. They mostly buy in print too. And a lot of novels go on for some 20 or so volumes.

Main goal is to get an anime since even a shitty anime can sell a ton of merchandise, which is the main profit generator

>honorifics shit

Mostly up to the fan-scanlator. Lots of drama and fighting in those communities, I might make an effortpost someday since I was directly watching a lot of this shit unfold since I used to do fan-scanlation.

A fair number don't actually speak English well, some of the most frequently uploading groups are from South America and do a really shit job
