There is definitely something going on with western media sort of valorising being ugly on purpose, and I don't just mean america. When I watched the french animated movie The Triplets of Belleville because it was nominated for an Oscar ages ago, I did notice that large sections of it were dedicated to just animating deliberately ugly and revolting stuff for seemingly no reason at all. Like solid minutes of sweating, heaving, jiggling flab or similar, with no pertinence to anything going on. Anime tries to always be "cute" and aesthetically appealing which can make it bland and samey, but I don't really understand the desire some western animators have with like animating three minutes of close-up pimples and vomit or whatever
