Despite Sony's best attempts at becoming an even worse laughing stock and Nintendo's unending moral bankruptcy, Microsoft has somehow still managed to be the worst of the three when it comes to consoles. In fact, everybpdy memes the PS5 for having no games but nobody even knows the current gen xbox console (Xbox Series X One? idk) because quite honestly there's no reason to buy one - and with the plethora of xbox layoffs recently this trend might continue. In an interesting turn of events, Microsoft has put extra emphasis on its Xbox Research team and furthermore wants to reach out to devs; The idea, obviously, is to gather and implement the data from these devs as effectively as possible, and it's intended to affect everything from large studios to small independent developers. Interestingly, Team Xbox wants feedback from those who aren't currently shipping their games on Xbox as well, allowing for "fresh perspectives" in the process.
"If you are making video games, we're interested in hearing from you. If you aren't on Xbox, we'd love to know why. And honestly, if you are using our competitor's products, you probably have a great perspective we could learn from!"
"It's a bit like testing players who play games like yours β they are your target audience and you want to hear fresh perspectives because their expectations may differ from folks who are deep in your community."

tl;dr
If the majority of developers simply say "the sales of products on your console compare to the competition isn't enough to justify the cost of porting," I am not quite sure there is anything Microsoft can do about that.
Despite how things have turned on for the Xbox brand, MIcrosoft really did try hard this generation and it just didn't work.
Microsoft handled cross-gen way better than Sony
Microsoft provided a much better feature set for Series X|S over PlayStation
Microsoft released actual new games. Microsoft couldn't predict the reception of said games, but not one first-party game Microsoft released said "Remastered" or "Director's Cut" on the box nor did Microsoft charge $10 more for Series X|S upgrades.
It's honestly just over.

And they all sucked.
Nintendo is the only winner this gen imo.

Only thing Xbox has going for it is Microsoft Flight Simulator, but it's pretty gay without flight controls like honeycomb that are experienced best on a PC.

Everything MS makes is also on PC. There's absolutely no reason to buy an Xbox if you have a decent PC. They're losing money on the consoles so I guess it makes sense for them to only want to sell them to people who aren't willing to build a PC, but it's also just giving up on the whales who buy every console.
I thought their plan was to kill PlayStation then switch to selling essentially PC hardware under the Xbox brand (controllers, a steamdeck competitor and pre built PCs marketed as consoles), but apparently their plan for world domination really didn't go any deeper than "get people hooked on Gamepass"

They really should make Gamepass exclusive to Xbox. That would solve pretty much all their problems

Based on the fact that it's microshat, the plan was:
buy most game studios
run game pass at loss
nobody wants to buy a game at full price instead of using game pass
competitors die out as none have M$ level cash reserves
slowly wind game pass investment down to zero, and increase subscription fee to infinity
profit

Average consumer has negative IQ, vidya just has a very different audience than music or TV/film
The average casual buys a few games a year, a yearly sports game, a shootygame (CoD) and maybe some AAA shit that catches their eye. The value proposition of Gamepass isn't there for those people
The poweruser OTOH wants the ownership and control, instead of reliance on Microsoft adding/pulling games at will, nuking all modding, and taking away all your games if you say BIPOC BIPOC BIPOC in voicechat
Gamepass just doesn't have as big of a potential userbase as they thought, at least for now.

I think the problem is that the userbase is quite large, but to actually implement what they want to they need to actually corner the video game market as a whole rather than carve a decent niche out as they have done. There's a huge amount of pc players (not just terminally online people) that are resistant to using anything that isn't Steam.

Think they are going to manage to make a successor to the switch without making r-slurred decisions that kill sales?

PS4+5 have roughly the same sales as the Switch but generally I agree.
In fact, this was most likely the last competitive gen ever.
When the Switch 2 drops it will all be over ... unless ... SEGA chads ... our time will come.

Even then Sony game sales are lackluster, it's comical how much they fumbled it.
Valve is unironically the only real competition and even then not really.
Turns out Xbox was right when they said the console wars would soon be over.
