The paradox of tolerance is meant to apply to ideologies that don't tolerate liberalism (especially freedom of speech). This is because tolerating ideologies that don't tolerate liberalism is inherently an existential threat to liberalism while tolerating illiberal ideologies that are hateful of minorities or women or whatever might not be good, but isn't an existential threat to liberalism.

The uncle saying racist shit at Thanksgiving does not pose an existential threat to liberalism.
