if there is one place that is guilty of this "strategy" the most It's probably Popeye. No fried chicken/fastfood slop restaurants chain I have been through has that intense fryfood smell, it has to be intentional at Popeye

It's because Popeyes are often staffed by lower economic class individuals who are much less likely to fully clean their fryers or even replace the oil as often as they're supposed to. And they use the fryers a lot there.
