I welcome him ending rampant censorship but it doesn't mean I have to trust or forgive him. He's profit motivated and is doing this to protect his business interests given the new political dynamic. I hope he is scared of a what a Trump admin will do. He would gladly go back to silencing conservative speech if it benefited him. He should still face consequence for what he did as should the government officials who compelled him.

all we need to do is agree we all need to work together to build the social media we want, and then we can just fund coop based alternatives at less than a $1/yr/user
the infrastructure costs for modern social media are astronomically trivial compared to what the dev budgets are for those companies, it's just that they are staffed by blowhards who built careers on justifying big spend in "reasonable" manners that over time bloats the costs beyond 3 orders of magnitude.
of course agreeing to "we need to work together" is a stupidly huge ask, so i guess we can just endlessly complain about profit motived enterprise running all our info tech.

There's just not really any reason why anyone would want to build a social network for the greater good. The closest you'll get is something like forum software. Otherwise social media just is a bunch of guys trying to figure out how to manipulate their users into scrolling pointless shit for as long as possible and unless you have that particular profit motive, there's no reason at all why you'd build something like that.

that's some part of the fricking problem, but programmers are fricking surprisingly pro-social in this regard. The fricking much bigger problem are fricking network effects and inertia, both of which are fricking huge barriers to getting the fricking cattle to migrate
