i downloaded it because the chinese seemed friendly and like they want to talk to burgers from the screens i was seeing
i tried to get a weibo account back in 2020 but needed a referral from a mainlander
so i tried wechat international version but it wouldnt let me actually make an account either
i think talking to mainland chinese would be interesting

i was trying to learn mandarin during coof lockdowns and to facilitate my chinese agent larp on ruqqus but that shit isnt at all like a normal language and apps + neurodivergent superpower with linguistics was no help with something so alien even for base level stuff and there were no classes in the area
so i figured frick it ill just talk to actual chinese and supplement immersion with the best i can self teaching from resources
it is impossible to talk to actual chinese
china literally will not let you do it

Yeah, if you grew up in Asia and didnt hear Europeanish languages around age 1-3 you will never hear the same sounds that we do, and No matter how much immersion you get, it wont help, and Vice versa, and I know people whove lived here 30+ years, understand English perfectly, and its still harder than heck to understand them
Ive heard Chinese has some additional dimension to it thats inscrutable but you dont even need that to cockblock your efforts to learn the language

most singaporeans here study chinese until the age of 16 but we're mostly meh at it because we use a mixture of english and chinese
like when i speak to my friends or family it'd be like "ching chong bing bong politician is r-slurred ching chong"
and then i try to say the same thing to a mainlander who doesnt know english it'd be like "ching chong bing bong" ... what is chinese for "politician"
it's really very hard unless you're on a constant diet of chinese media i think, when i binge on chinese shows my language skills improve significantly lol

It's kinda by design; the language being hard to learn is part of how they enforce social structure. During the Cultural Revolution, when they pushed Mandarin as the "one true Chinese language," they could've reformed it and made it easier - but they deliberately didn't. Makes it easier to concentrate education within the Party, then give out appointments and gibs based on "education" (aka do you sound like a local r-slur or a Beijinger).
Plus if us gweilos can't learn it, we can't spread our dangerous ideas.

There's a site What's on Weibo that will talk about what memes are going on in Chinese social media at the moment.
ChinaSMACK was really good for this in the 2000s but apparently the website is down as of this month. It's where I got stuff like my tragically underrated post about The Most Awesome Chinese Female Reporter Ever. Or everyone on the Chinese internet saying that girls who watch k-dramas are literally r-slurred. Hopefully the really good stuff has been archived.
