I watched it with a friend and once had the realization that he actually got it. I was just watching it for the surrealism when I was stoned but he made an offhand comment that made me realize there actually was an deeper overarching plot that had escaped me. Am I just a midwit?

I've watched The Return five times in full and revisited individual episodes many times. The more you watch it the more it actually completely holds together. It's extremely dense and long and at times tests the viewers patience more than any other TV show besides Too Old To Die Young by Nicolas Winding Refn (another goated show that I have to imagine filtered 90% of people, and I can't blame anyone who didn't like it).
To be honest I think the best approach is to just take it all in on the first viewing. Don't try too hard to "get it", I think trying to decode Lynch is a fools errand anyway. He operates most effectively on an emotional plane imo, just let the show take you for a ride. It is NOT an epic puzzle box show. He is trying to convey themes and messages and ideas, but it's simply not a show where all questions are answered. The universe is filled with endless unknowable mysteries and possibilities.

There's a four hour video on YouTube breaking down all the symbolism and shit in twin peaks. The guy who made it is an obnoxious cute twink who misses the forest for the trees, but seeing how consistently and intentionally symbolism is used in the show gave @PillsburyDoughboy a way deeper appreciation for lynch. Funny you should use that phrase because he also tried using it as a way to back up his schizo rambling.
"FOREST FOR THE TREES - TREES, SAWED INTO LOGS AND MADE INTO TELEPHONE POLES! SAWING LOGS IS A EUPHAMISM FOR SNORING! I'M SO INTELLIGENT!"

My dad watched that show back when it was globoslop. I remember when the last season came over 20 years later he told me with excitement to watch and something about "quem matou Laura Palmer". Me, being an absolute zoomoid had no idea what was that was about.

Twin Peaks used to air after Fantástico because it was too shocking for Brazilian audiences
It genuinely was a cultural phenomenon
