Very sad, impossible to overstate how much this man's work means to me. And I know so many others who can say the same. One of the brightest spots in a dark time of my life during the pandemic was when my ex and I rented a local movie theater for my birthday and showed a double feature of Sunset Boulevard and Mulholland Drive for all our friends. Twin Peaks: The Return is one of the most beautiful, creative, and moving pieces of art I've ever seen. My first high quality comment on this site was about how Inland Empire should be considered one of the great films.

It's so sad to see him go because it's another sign of the end of an era. So many of our great filmmakers have already gone and so many will soon. I thought of this a lot while watching Oh, Canada by Paul Schrader a month ago. At this point I don't think these masters owe us anything and any project they complete now is a gift. But to see someone like Lynch go means that a major moment in art and human expression now lives permanently in the past.

It's been 8 years since Twin Peaks: The Return came out. I didn't really expect anything more from him. But it was nice knowing he was around. Now he's gone but his films and stories and music and performances will live as long as we keep watching.

I totally realize most people are going to disagree with me here but I feel compelled to say that killing David Lynch for a joke wasn't a very kind thing to do. We have seen TONS of posts from vulnerable populations talking about how Twin Peaks is a source of support and humor in a dark time. Irony and dirtbagism aside, taking away that support without warning was not okay. You can say I'm being silly, or humorless or reactionary. Whatever. I love David Lynch and I love this community. But sometimes I come home after dealing with ableism and our nightmare reality all day, and this man was one of many things that make me feel better. It wasn't a good feeling to find this sub closed for the sake of irony. Maybe that's laughable or pathetic. But for me, it's true.

Season 1 and half of season 2 were good, but apparently Lynch had a moid diva moment and got mad because the audience (and then the network) told him to reveal the killer. He got mad, and the second half of 2 killed the show. It was frickin awful lol. He apparently wanted to make the whole show about the mystery of her murder, but nobody wanted that shit but David.

Season 3 happened 25 years later in the story, and it was awful. His peepee suckers loved it, but he answered no questions and it's like it's just a show where everyone takes LSD and nothing makes sense.

You're forgetting that Kyle MacLachlan started dating Donna's actress during production and she decided to be a massive c*nt and demand that Cooper not get with Audrey which is why they had to introduce Annie and Billy Zane's character out of nowhere and waste an ungodly amount of time on them. Lynch's characters feel like they written by an mega neurodivergent—which they indeed were. I can't take them seriously. They feel like an alien's surface level understanding of human beings…just gets old after a while. I can usually tolerate that stuff if I find it funny, but I just find Lynch tedious. I agree with the dramacel upthread, give me John Waters weirdness any day over Lynch's.

Belle De Jour is probably the best starting point for Bunuel.

I hate to take the bait like this but John Waters and David Lynch have wildly different goals. Lynch is really not trying to shock/provoke/nauseate like Waters is. I love John Waters dearly though, Female Trouble is one of the funniest movies ever made.

This is cope. He doesn't do it as explicitly as Waters, but Lynch is like one of those weird sound pitches that makes your skin crawl and shit your pants or a fun house that's painted in these weird angles so you keep tipping over even though everything seems normal at first glance. But it's on purpose.

80% of people I've met in real life who love David Lynch have been the most insufferable r-slurs that seem like adult versions of teenage hardcore Donnie Darko fans. Lynch was a great dramatard in real life, and I think most of what he filmed was just to frick with people.

Strongly agree (love Kyle MacLachlan), also technically Lynch wanted it to be two movies and if he had gotten his wish it would've probably been way less incoherent

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I don't dislike the new Dune films but I really don't think they're nearly as good as people make them out to be. My main issue is that I do not feel anything whatsoever for the characters. The plot zips along so quickly that we never get a chance to sit with anything.

Every modern adaptation of an epic sci fi/fantasy novel just makes me even more appreciative of what Peter Jackson was able to do with his LOTR films. And even he couldn't recreate the magic with his awful Hobbit films (many reasons for this tbf, some were out of his control).

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I've only seen the first Dune movie remake, and it was dreadfully boring. The plot twist of the Atreides are being conspired against is extremely simple (fat man want money) and telegraphed from the start. Paul becoming Jesus is telegraphed from the start. Everything is incredibly simple and linear. It's such a shallow sci-fi setting. No one would give a shit if not for the worms.

I've watched The Return five times in full and revisited individual episodes many times. The more you watch it the more it actually completely holds together. It's extremely dense and long and at times tests the viewers patience more than any other TV show besides Too Old To Die Young by Nicolas Winding Refn (another goated show that I have to imagine filtered 90% of people, and I can't blame anyone who didn't like it).

To be honest I think the best approach is to just take it all in on the first viewing. Don't try too hard to "get it", I think trying to decode Lynch is a fools errand anyway. He operates most effectively on an emotional plane imo, just let the show take you for a ride. It is NOT an epic puzzle box show. He is trying to convey themes and messages and ideas, but it's simply not a show where all questions are answered. The universe is filled with endless unknowable mysteries and possibilities.
