Or just work for a contractor to the government.

I work for the government as a contractor and I don't have to bend to their bullshit rules.

Gov employees do.

Despite their perks of never getting fired and having great benefits, your the governments b-word. If they tell you to jump. You jump. They tell you to move to a different state, you do or quit.

They tell you to come in, you do.

Meanwhile I can tell them "not in my contract, go ask my program manager about that and maybe I will for more $$$"

Jump in the discussion.

They are right about the RTO order being extremely stupid. I know someone who's team has to do stuff in a large multistate region and they have people spread out covering smaller local areas. My friend is the only person from his team in his city. So he has to now go to the local courthouse 5x a week to work in a small office with no one else. It's r-slurred.

Jump in the discussion.

Chuds hate people who work from home because they remind them how much more comfortable they'd be if they finished high school.

Admittedly it's pretty easy to find joy in people having to RTO just because redditors are such twinks about it, but I really do think a lot of it is just sour grapes from bitter unskilled laborers.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

No, I hate WFH because at no point in the scamdemic did I ever get to stay home. Not the 2 weeks, not ever. Now my job is 10x annoying, because every time the power is out, I don't just get the normal dumb question of "how long is it going to be out?!", I get the indignation from buttholes who go ""I WORK FROM HOME AND HAVE TO BE ON A TEAMS/ZOOM CALL, AND I DONT HAVE CELL SERVICE AND MEED MY POWER ON!", as if it's my fault that some rich peepeehead from NYC decided to spend 1.2million on a farmhouse in the butt end of nowhere, but somehow couldn't drop 13k on a generator.

So, as far as I am concerned, WFHcels can die of AIDS, for being obnoxious and making rural homes unaffordable to anyone other than other transplants.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

In the same vein, people need to stop relying on a single residential Internet hookup with no SLA to power their Mission Critical 6 figure zoom jobs. Your ISP cannot stop a booze cruiser from taking out the trunk line feeding your neighborhood, and if you're not paying guaranteed uptime rates they're not going to fix it with guaranteed uptime urgency.

Most of the actually competent wfh people are aware that we all have backup wireless solutions in our pockets these days but they're outnumbered by a lot.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

If my power or internet go out I just tell my manager and don't work. They're obviously not going to fire me for something beyond my control and as long as it's not like a monthly thing nobody will care.

If anything it's like a free vacation day for me (and no it doesn't come out of my PTO, but I do still get paid).

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I wish everyone was like that. I routinely have to interact with people for work that have seemingly staked their entire lives and livelihoods on their residential coax or DSL ISP having 100% uptime.

If it's that goddarn important, Becky, you either need a backup connection or a new arrangement with your employer.

There are plenty of skilled people that can't work from home like doctors or lawyers. But there are also unskilled people doing wfh that have no business doing so like clerks or customer service reps. My local government had a crazy long backlog for service requests because no one was actually doing their job while remote. The issue, ironically, is a lack of beauracratic efficiency where bosses just don't know or don't care how to measure their employees' outputs while remote so people skate by and get nothing done.

But i know workplaces that do it well and it's because they've figured out how to make this work. Any business that can't figure it out should be scrutinized heavily because it shows they have bad management.

You'd be surprised at how much lawyering can be done as WFH. Law spitefully resists technology because it thinks making people needlessly suffer engenders respect. But the lockdown forced all sorts of modernization, and they realized being pointlessly miserable doesn't actually build character.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yeah many of the law firms I know, especially the small ones, are mostly/completely wfh. It's partially caused by the organizational structure of law firms, where they don't want to have fixed costs for large office spaces due to not being able to hold large reserves and having irregular cash flows. That is even more the case for contingency firms with super irregular cash flows.

This is normally fixed through rotating loans but minimizing the amount of debt is beneficial to the firm.

You know nothing about government. If they didn't force the issue the government will make zero attempt to even find office space or recruit local teams for years and years if they're go en any leeway. By forcing their hand and making them bear the inconvenience right now, they'll actually get moving in a reasonable time and try to rent office space for your friend and relocate his r-slurred colleagues.

This is why RTO has been a shitshow. They spent the last few years disregarding location while hiring. Now everybody is supposed to come on site and pretend that commuting an hour to sit on zoom calls all day is more productive.
