Every time Leftoids bring up the idea of seceding or strongly embracing localism, someone always responds with "errrrrmmmm but if we secede or focus on states rights, zillions of women and blacks in Alabama and marginalized folx will be genocided for getting abortions", and then all the talk of secession dies down like clockwork. Whenever people talk about how Republican states take more federal money than they pay, they neglect to realize that this is mostly social programs which Republicans would be more than happy to dismantle.

In California's case, it's completely wrong. They get back what they give pretty much. It's the old money northeastern states to give more than they receive.

It's an asinine exercise in double think by people who voted for higher state taxes because in their minds government is effectively Oliver Twist just trying to get by, but also conveniently forget that these were state taxes when it comes time to talk about national budgets.

Social programs for Dem cities. And a lot of it is also subsidies that allow cities to exist without being even more expensive. They love pooping on the farmers and the communities being subsidized by "city taxes" (business taxes that redditors are unlikely to contribute to notably), but if those communities weren't kept on life support and the farm good prices kept down, cities would just be fricked.
