But to a great degree, the real segregationist George Wallace voters were frozen out of politics, which was generally accepted as the right thing to do — they were not simply adopted into the Republican Party after Nixon. Rather their departure created a vacuum in which a new culture could emerge. But the South is very religious and as the Sixth Party System developed, the Republicans increasingly became the party of Christianity (for better and for worse), while the Episcopal Church in the Northeast started to collapse into irrelevance — in principle it was always an aberration that Anglicanism had persisted in the United States. This resulted in formerly Republican VT/NH/ME becoming safe Democrat strongholds. It was the religious realignment that cemented the Sixth Party System with a Republican South and Democratic North.
