https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_Party_System

It wasn't just the Southern Strategy, though that played a part. But to a great degree, the real segregationist George Wallace voters were frozen out of politics, which was generally accepted as the right thing to do β€” they were not simply adopted into the Republican Party after Nixon. Rather their departure created a vacuum in which a new culture could emerge. My grandfather came to Louisiana in the '60s as a Republican, was active in desegregation efforts, and died decades later a Republican. These people were not about to offer a fig leaf to segregationists, regardless of what the new propaganda says.

Decades after Nixon, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee and Georgia voted for Clinton in 1992. In fact the bluest states on the top map have all had ongoing flickers of Democratic success (Clinton from Arkansas, Manchin from WV, NC 2008, GA 2020-22). But the South is very religious and as the Sixth Party System developed, the Republicans increasingly became the party of Christianity (for better and for worse), while the Episcopal Church in the Northeast started to collapse into irrelevance β€” in principle it was always an aberration that Anglicanism had persisted in the United States. This resulted in formerly Republican VT/NH/ME becoming safe Democrat strongholds. It was the religious realignment that cemented the Sixth Party System with a Republican South and Democratic North.

Well that and Wallace being almost assassinated in '72 after being quietly recognized as the front runner in the DNC national primary contests. That right there was pretty convenient for a establishment that pushed widespread unpopular integration politics via court order, in spite of democracy, not because of it.

Not that I have much evidence of any conspiracy, only that it was a stroke of luck a populist politician with charisma, nebulous platform, and hardliner segregationist views with a national profile caught a bullet at the perfect moment by someone who previously supported him.

So it was republican party going to christians in 90s that cemented whole thing.

Episcopal Church in the Northeast started to collapse into irrelevance

Wasnt their whole thing live and let live. They didnt push themselves. Even if they were very powerful at one point. I rember reading in post civil war book about charity workers/missionaries who went to south. They didnt try to recruit anyone. They didnt build churches. Southerners hadnt even heard them. Even when it was the chruch of boston elite.

Atwater: Y'all don't quote me on this. You start out in 1954 by saying, "BIPOC, BIPOC, BIPOC." By 1968 you can't say "BIPOC"β€”that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow meβ€”because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a heck of a lot more abstract than "BIPOC, BIPOC."

They ended up quoting him on that.

>now that they get voted out of power, they start sperging about election fraud, threatening secession and rebellion against the government, begging foreign countries for help, building a #resistance movement, demanding freedom of speech, and criticizing social media censorship
