Time to be contrarian and say that the TV licence is actually good

Okay so it doesn't work out perfectly like that in practice, but a TV service that's free from both of those cancerous influences is a good thing indeed.

It's funded by what amounts to a tax. How is that meaningfully different from being funded by the government? People don't have the choice to opt out of paying if they don't want, so it doesn't give individuals any say in the content that is produced, unless they're willing to opt out of TV altogether. It's just an r-slured way to structure a tax in the early days when tv ownership was a big deal that should have been retired decades ago.
