Where is the logic in making netflix customers pay?

At this point just make it a tax and have everyone pay it, that'd be more justifiable.

The Canadian TV and Telecoms Commission has announced a 5% streaming tax. This will be effective from 1 September 2024. The levy is chaged at 5% on Canadian-generated revenus with online streaming TV, video, music and gaming services.

I think cable stations have to pay a tax. So the thought is streaming services should have one too.

Only if you watch live TV. There's really no way they could ever identify that though. You'd have to let an inspector into your house voluntarily and show them that you're watching live TV.

Which makes the whole license thing even dumber because you could just collect a small fee when they buy the subscription instead of playing detective trying to figure out whose has a tv license

live TV

Like watching a live stream on a computer from the BBC or another British TV channel?

Any live-broadcast "programme", whether over-the-air, cable, or even if it's on YouTube (excluding user-generated content). On-demand/catch-up services are not covered.

Do I need a TV Licence to watch Youtube?

If you are watching a TV programme live on YouTube, you need to be covered by a TV Licence.

A licence is not required to view user generated content, clips and videos on YouTube. This includes live streamed content that is not part of a television broadcast. Or being broadcast at the same time by other means.

WOW.

Everytime I think Canada is boned, I just look at Britain and I feel a lot better. At least everyone here knows the CBC is garbage and is only kept running to keep Liberal loyalists happy.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I'm not a brit, but I live in a country where we have a similar licence system. You have to pay it, even if you don't have a TV, because you probably have access to the internet and the national public TV has a web livestream you can watch. You don't have internet at home? You still have to pay, because your phone has internet. You somehow don't have a phone? You still have to pay, because your car has a radio, and you could listen to the public radio there.

Despite that, I don't pay the licence. If they come knocking on my door, I'll probably start, but until then I'll just save myself the 200 a year.

Time to be contrarian and say that the TV licence is actually good

>not funded by advertising
>not funded by governments

Okay so it doesn't work out perfectly like that in practice, but a TV service that's free from both of those cancerous influences is a good thing indeed.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It's funded by what amounts to a tax. How is that meaningfully different from being funded by the government? People don't have the choice to opt out of paying if they don't want, so it doesn't give individuals any say in the content that is produced, unless they're willing to opt out of TV altogether. It's just an r-slured way to structure a tax in the early days when tv ownership was a big deal that should have been retired decades ago.
