years ago i paid for a protonmail account, but didn't end up using it. i got back on it like three years later to pay to try it again and they wanted payment for the entire time that i hadn't been using it. apparently they don't turn off the account if you stop paying, they just make you pay to log back into it. i've never paid for email before or after that, so no idea if that's normal or what but i told the customer service guy no thank you

I mean I assume in that time they've been running the service for you in your absence. For the average user, who isn't their target, they don't care. For their business partners though, that probably is a really useful feature worth paying for.
