Two weeks ago Protonmail CEO Andy Yen said he likes the Trump cabinet appointment Gail Slater and what she'll do for privacy, saying Dems are not the party of the little guy. Redditors are still declaring they'll be cancelling their (mostly free) service and continuing to have mental breakdowns.

Excerpt from Yen's comment:

This is not going to be a popular opinion, but on the specific issue of antitrust, Democrats fell short. In 2022, we campaigned extensively in the US for anti-trust legislation. Two bills were ready, with bipartisan support. Chuck Schumer (who coincidently has two daughters working as big tech lobbyists) refused to bring the bills for a vote. In the aftermath of this failure, great people like former Democratic rep David Cicilline left congress, leaving few strong voices for antitrust left in the Democratic party. In the meantime, at a 2024 event covering antitrust remedies, out of all the invited senators, just a single one showed up - JD Vance.

years ago i paid for a protonmail account, but didn't end up using it. i got back on it like three years later to pay to try it again and they wanted payment for the entire time that i hadn't been using it. apparently they don't turn off the account if you stop paying, they just make you pay to log back into it. i've never paid for email before or after that, so no idea if that's normal or what but i told the customer service guy no thank you :marseyno:

I mean I assume in that time they've been running the service for you in your absence. For the average user, who isn't their target, they don't care. For their business partners though, that probably is a really useful feature worth paying for.
