This story feels a little too pat. Law or no, the Messer would have been an ideal self-defense weapon for a civilian: easy to carry, relatively cheap.

they weren't planning a coup, but in the year leading up to it, rohm was constantly giving speeches calling for a second (redder) revolution and that didn't work for hitler because hitler was already chancellor and the people that rohm wanted to merk had already thrown their support behind hitler...but they were threatening to jump ship if rohm wasn't dealt with.
so yah, not a coup. it was more like the two groups were in competition for hitler's favor, but rohm's position was weaker and his behavior did have a serious chance of knocking hitler out of power.
