It's been awhile, but it was basically settled neutrally. The guy couldn't use Data as property, but neither was Data recognized as human.
This was continued a bit in Voyager where the medical hologram EMH wrote a play and sent it back to Earth to be published and distributed. The publisher dude made alterations without the EMH's permission citing that the EMH isn't human and has no rights over the play. It was similarly taken to court with a similar ruling that the EMH retains control but isn't considered human.
Both cases I'm pretty sure they left it open at the end that machines/holograms could one day be considered alive/human, but that they weren't ready yet to make such judgments. Not that they specifically ruled they weren't alive.
