You either worked for some very small companies or didn't even realize that you had a 3 month probation period because nobody competent gets fired during it.

I work for American companies but the rules are the same in both, about 90 days where you dont have to give advanced notice for firing

In most states here you don't have to give advanced notice for firing ever.

Unless you both live and work in the US, they probably have to follow canada labor laws. The US has no mandatory notice for firing employees. Some states do I think, mine definitely doesn't.

Cuts both ways ofc. I can literally just stop showing up to work next week with no notice or warning whatsoever and there is zero legal action they can take against me. They also are still legally obligated to pay me right up until I stop showing up to work.

I've done both but usually it would be a contract remote from canada so there's no labour laws lol. But yeah for real employment contractors it's mostly an informal thing that's standard practice and mostly a way to hold off doing all the paperwork for benefits/perks/credit cards for first while. My company uses it pretty aggressively instead of doing long interviews, you fit in or you're gone within ~2 months.

Nope, a lot of government and private jobs have a grace period they can fire you for anything. After that apparently you're a tenured professor or some shit. All of these people are still in that window and the government just did MASSIVE hiring spree to make the jobs report not look as bad lmao

I must be blessed. Every job I've had had benefits from day 1 besides my part time teen jobs

It's not about benefits at private organizations (usually) it's about being new enough that you have no protection against firing. For the feds, you're supposed to follow a procedure to fire someone, and the fired employee has a department they can go to if they think you did so unfairly, and then some kind of arbitration is supposed to occur. If you're brand new, you don't get to do that, they can just straight up fire you. Trump went after those people first because they have less recourse.

Oh I've never been employed by the government. I'm not a cute twink

It's usually every employee hired by an agency or company within their first 3-6 months. No vacation, no sick time, and basically no union protections from getting fired during that period.

In government jobs, you are a probationary employee when first hired and also when first promoted to a new role. So in some cases the people being fired are actually the high performers who advanced their career in the last year but haven't "proven their fitness" in their new job title yet.
