If the assumption that fed workers are all useless moms who sit and play farmville 7 out of 8h of their workday are true, then we're currently paying for people to produce nothing, meaning inflation.

On here, reddit and twitter this feels like really inorganic posting.

Here people are somehow conflating the firing of probationary employees with the total annihilation of career federal employees. Probation exists to allow those employees to be easily fired for under-performance, this has nothing at all to do with the idea that Musk can just go in and fire the average employee at-will.

fednews looks like it is trying to make the average low-level employee look like some entitled harry potter-loving redditor, so that everyone can feel good about them losing their jobs

Twitter is even worse, where you get these really strangely written posts about "This is what we voted for!". Why would someone post that exact phrase? And why so many people?

It's legit strange seeing what looks like such heavy astroturfing from the right, using cowtools that are usually the domain of the left (or in the case of rdrama, Israel)

it's just a severance contract the individual agencies are managing? The email sent out was just asking people if they want to be put on the list which is followed up with a normal contract by the HR in the agency itself (not DOGE). There's been many times where gov commit to paying things that aren't yet fully funded by congress.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It's not just a question of funding, it's also if federal agencies are allowed to place employees on such a lengthy paid administrative leave.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

on what basis? the only real critique I've heard is the congressional funding because of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antideficiency_Act (which has never been enforced) otherwise its just a normal severance contract

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

my understanding it is not a normal severance contract where you get a lump sum buyout but rather you get put on administrative leave until the end of the fiscal year. You don't have work, are exempt from RTO, still get pay and benefits. There is a question mark if this is allowed under the Administrative Leave Act of 2016. I will say even if it's found to be legal, being put on leave rather than get a buyout allows some ways for you to get screwed, like the possibility of getting fired or having your position eliminated.

I think the concern is more daddy can rug pull that. Federal government complies with labor law because it chooses to do so but doesn't actually have to do so.

If daddy decides in a few weeks that all those people who quit are really traitors and stops paying them the legal challenges wouldn't do anything. Courts could also easily decide that the payments are unconstitutional as there isn't an appropriation backing them.

They deserve nothing anyway but it would be pretty r-slurred to believe you will absolutely get the 8 months severance.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

That's never going to happen. The government isn't some shady small business that can skip town. It always pays it's employees and a severence package will be a contract. The only risk is delayed payments, but they are 100% getting paid

Milei already showed like a year ago that you can take an axe to government jobs, and modern people and bureaucracies are so cucked that they won't even assassinate you. And that's in Latin America, where government jobs are probably more sacred than they are in the US. As soon as I saw that Milei was still alive a few months after he started his cuts, I began to dimly realize on some level that maybe we are no longer in an epoch where one can expect any real resistance from the so-called "deep state" in roughly liberal, Western nations. The "deep state" is great at overthrowing some despot in bumfrick Africa and replacing him with a new despot, but clearly they are not some great Illuminati Kennedy-killing force. If they were, Trump would be dead by now. Trump isn't fighting against some hardened organized conspiracy, he's fighting against a bunch of 50 year old bureaucrats and wine moms who have no idea what the frick they're doing. Luckily, probably Trump also has no idea what he frick he's doing.

How is it possible western countries have more bureaucrats then they did back when everything was done on paper?

Countries that publish that data show. Numbers went down all 90s. Then in 2000s started to trend upward. Finally eclipsing paper peak in sometimes in 2010s.

Civilised world needs to think what paper work is neccecery and just take axe for rest.

I think in croatia. There was news story recentyl where they were planing restore some natural habitat as it was. It requireed small dam to be build.

Planing for this small dam went for 7 years. One project got green light. They found out that beavers had build dam where they had planed to buiild their dam.

7 years and some beavers just went and did it.

States and regulations keep expanding. If you want to solve any of this you have to actually find what regulations and government actions are actually slowing things down, remove them and then make redunancies based on roles no longer required. Just axing the civil service means corporations will now have to wait 4 years to get a permit or government services stop working.

Jump in the discussion.

In most states here you don't have to give advanced notice for firing ever.

Unless you both live and work in the US, they probably have to follow canada labor laws. The US has no mandatory notice for firing employees. Some states do I think, mine definitely doesn't.

Cuts both ways ofc. I can literally just stop showing up to work next week with no notice or warning whatsoever and there is zero legal action they can take against me. They also are still legally obligated to pay me right up until I stop showing up to work.

Jump in the discussion.

Unless you both live and work in the US, they probably have to follow canada labor laws.

I've done both but usually it would be a contract remote from canada so there's no labour laws lol. But yeah for real employment contractors it's mostly an informal thing that's standard practice and mostly a way to hold off doing all the paperwork for benefits/perks/credit cards for first while. My company uses it pretty aggressively instead of doing long interviews, you fit in or you're gone within ~2 months.

Jump in the discussion.

Nope, a lot of government and private jobs have a grace period they can fire you for anything. After that apparently you're a tenured professor or some shit. All of these people are still in that window and the government just did MASSIVE hiring spree to make the jobs report not look as bad lmao

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It's not about benefits at private organizations (usually) it's about being new enough that you have no protection against firing. For the feds, you're supposed to follow a procedure to fire someone, and the fired employee has a department they can go to if they think you did so unfairly, and then some kind of arbitration is supposed to occur. If you're brand new, you don't get to do that, they can just straight up fire you. Trump went after those people first because they have less recourse.
