I never understood this whole "openly gay" shit (even less so today) and I was the first "openly gay" guy at my high school of 2100 people in rural America back in the early 2000s.
But it wasn't like I went around flaunting I was gay, I had a boyfriend and otherwise was a "normal" guy.
Maybe I was lucky, but the only "problem" I ever had, was one guy would yell "CUTE TWINK" really loud when passing me in the hallway (I fricked him senior year btw).

The problem is that the range of gay degeneracy is far more expansive in range than straight degeneracy, at least in terms of what is tolerated within the community.
