I had to read the Iliad (the book that comes before the Odyssey) in university. The actual battle sections were legit awesome, no holds barred brutal, epic stuff. The problem is that's only about 20% of the book. The rest is, no joke, dudes talking about their feelings. This is legitimately insane, especially for something that was originally written on scrolls.

I guess when your civilization has literally only one story to read, you gotta make it last but wow does that feelings crap go on for wwwwaaaayyyy too long.

It wasn't written on scrolls, it just wasn't written at all originally. You gotta remember, it's basically the sum up of a bunch of folk tales that was meant to be sung.
