Black: you only are if you look it, your actual ancestry doesn't matter.
The black answer is far more honest, even though it's disguised in privilege-speak. Turns out, you do owe them passing, and it's your fault if you think you don't. Which also explains why the Pretendians become so performative with their native identity, because they know the more they exaggerate the part, the more accepted their identity is.

Sure, which is how a lot of Pretendians end up being caught, claiming a connection to a tribe that had no record of them. Though it takes someone to start doubting them for the paper trail to kick in.
It's also different in other places, like Canada and Australia. While at least with New Zealand, you can generally just see if someone has Maori or Islander family through their size and facial features.
