Capitalism is far from perfect but the alternatives are considerably worse. The real misunderstanding is the causality. We don't work as much as we do because it's necessary to survive. We actually live in an era where you can do less work than ever and survive, at least in places like America.
We work as much as we do because, every time we become more productive, we -- mostly individually but consistently -- choose wealth over less work.
Weekly work hours have steadily trended downward, too, but we mostly work more because we like how it improves our lives.
