^ Pretty reasonable take. This dude's right. It's perfectly reasonable to expect a little something in return, though it's kind of uncouth to say so outright. That kind of negotiation should have been handled behind closed doors. We could have secured a mineral deal that benefited the U.S. while also strategically placing American interests in Ukraineโa move I don't particularly like because it's essentially a backdoor way of putting U.S. civilians there instead of actual military. But geopolitically, it's probably the smarter play, as it both protects Ukraine and, indirectly, Russia, because, if the war becomes politically inconvenient, Russia has an off-ramp and can stop bleeding troops.
That said, parading Zelensky around for a bunch of proles who are irrationally angry at Ukraine is just stupid. There were probably better ways to extract a win from him without turning it into a public spectacle.
