In contrast, Ukraine would have preferred to keep its nukes, but the anglo world was fixated on nuclear deproliferation as a political fad at the time. So we made them an offer they can't refuse. Europe also wanted them to keep the nukes, and objected to the disarmament. They wanted a nuclear-armed buffer state between them and Russia, which is why they are now so furious that Americans are telling them to pay for Ukraine. It is essentially saying that they should pay for the consequences of American actions.

Americans think this will be consequence free but collectively Europe owns more American debt than any other entity, and is the only currently liquid market for American debt. People freak out about all the billions of treasuries China owns and how much influence that buys over our economy, but the UK and Belgium together own more.
